　　伊迪丝·华顿(1862-1937),是美国历史上第一位获得普利策奖的女作家。她一生著作颇丰。与她以往描写“闲适”阶层生活的作品不同,《伊坦·弗洛美》真实地记录了穷苦人民的卑微生活,被公认为她所创作的最杰出的中篇小说。在对这部小说的研究中,很少有评论论及它所展现的圣经原型。本文依据诺斯罗普·弗莱的圣经原型批评理论,阐释作品中体现的人物、情节和意象原型。在运用圣经原型的同时,伊迪丝·华顿对“放弃与追求”主题、“死亡与复活”的主题进行了置换。本文通过对小说中圣经原型的分析,使读者能够深刻地理解华顿对当时笼罩在清教主义下的人民的深切同情,对传统道德观的不满,以及对人类痛楚的终极思考。同时,本文对处于“责任与自由”两难境地的人性的探讨,在当今社会仍具有现实意义。
