从《杰·阿·普鲁弗洛克的情歌》看托·斯·艾略特的文学理论与实践

  托·斯·艾略特(1888—1965)是二十世纪英美文学史上最重要的诗人之一,同时也是一个有极大影响的文学批评家,是英美新批评派的开山鼻祖。他对于传统的新阐释具有划时代的意义;他提出的“非个性化”理论和寻找“客观对应物”的创作手法对现代西方文学批评和诗歌创作产生了巨大的影响。他的诗和一套文论引发了人们轰轰烈烈的讨论与研究,至今余波未息。然而,人们往往未能把他的文论和诗歌作品联系起来研究,由此导致对艾略特作品的片面理解或不理解,甚至误解。事实上,作家的文艺观点总是贯穿于他的创作实践。换言之,作家的作品是其文艺思想的再现与具体化,正如《伟大的传统》序中所言:“文学批评史上的主要人物(如柯尔律治和托·斯·艾略特)往往也有文学作品传世,他们既是批评家,又是诗人,人们因钦佩他们的诗才而相信他们的判断。”因此,本文力图结合艾略特的文论《传统与个人才能》对他的文艺思想作一些初步的探讨,并联系其早期名诗《杰·阿尔弗瑞得·普鲁弗洛克的情歌》(以下简称为《情歌》)考察其理论与实践的结合。本文以新批评尤其是细读法为主要理论框架来探讨《情歌》的艺术价值,指出艾略特的“传统”观、“客观对应物”理论和“非个性化”思...
